Ciphon undergraduate research guide

How to get undergraduate research experience

Research can happen in a lab, in code, in the field, in an archive, through creative practice, or through theoretical work. Begin by finding people whose current questions connect to yours, then make a small, specific first request.

Field note

I was focused on getting professors to respond, but the next challenge was making room to meet them. I started blocking specific windows in my calendar so I could reply with real availability instead of scrambling each time.

What good outreach requires

Specificity comes from preparation.

  • Choose fit over prestige.
  • Describe one honest connection in your own words.
  • Make the first request small and respectful.
  • Follow up without treating a reply as an obligation.
  • Keep looking when timing or capacity is not a match.
